Does UAE have corporate tax? Yes, since 2023

Corporate tax

The UAE charges corporate tax on business profits for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. The corporate tax rate in UAE is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on everything above it.

Corporate tax return filing is due within nine months of the end of each tax period, and the tax is paid by the same date. For a year ending on 31 December, that is 30 September.

Free zone corporate tax: keeping the 0% rate

Free zones

A free zone company pays 0% only on qualifying income, and only while it meets the conditions of a Qualifying Free Zone Person. Its other taxable income is taxed at 9% from the first dirham, with no AED 375,000 band.

The test that catches most companies is the de minimis limit: revenue that does not qualify must stay within the lower of AED 5 million or 5% of total revenue. Cross it and the 0% rate is lost.

Each tax period, Excello's free zone review covers:

  • Every revenue line sorted into qualifying and other income
  • The de minimis limit worked out on your actual figures
  • The audited financial statements a Qualifying Free Zone Person must keep

UAE corporate tax registration and Small Business Relief

Getting set up

Registration

UAE corporate tax registration is required of every company, and of individuals whose business revenue passes AED 1 million a year. A company incorporated from 1 March 2024 registers within three months of incorporation. Registration is free.

Late registration carries an AED 10,000 penalty. The FTA waives it when the first return is submitted within seven months of the end of the first tax period.

Small Business Relief

A business whose revenue is AED 3 million or less, in the current and every earlier tax period, can claim Small Business Relief and be treated as having no taxable income. It applies to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026.

Qualifying Free Zone Persons and members of very large multinational groups cannot claim it.

VAT registration and VAT return filing

VAT

UAE VAT is 5%. VAT registration is required once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 in twelve months, and a business can register by choice from AED 187,500.

VAT return filing and payment are due within 28 days of the end of each tax period. Most businesses have quarterly periods; those with turnover of AED 150 million or more file every month.

Since 14 April 2026, unpaid VAT carries a penalty of 14% a year, charged monthly. A late return costs AED 1,000, or AED 2,000 if repeated within 24 months. Add or remove VAT on any amount with the free UAE VAT calculator.
